Moisture Meter Types for Hardwood Floors
What is an acceptable moisture reading in a hardwood floor?
Moisture content is critical when installing hardwood floors to prevent buckling, warping, or cracking. Acceptable moisture readings vary depending on the type of wood and the region. The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) recommends:
- 7-9% for solid hardwood
- 5-7% for engineered hardwood
Types of Moisture Meters for Hardwood Floors
Pin-Type Moisture Meters
- Most accurate and reliable
- Two pins are inserted into the wood, measuring the electrical resistance between them
- Requires drilling small holes that may be noticeable
Pinless-Type Moisture Meters
- Less accurate than pin-type meters
- Electrodes are placed on the surface of the wood, measuring the electrical field
- Non-invasive, but readings may be affected by surface moisture or finish
Digital vs. Analog Moisture Meters
- Digital: Provide precise readings on a digital display
- Analog: Use a needle to indicate moisture levels, less accurate than digital meters
Choosing the Right Moisture Meter
* Consider the accuracy and reliability required for your project.
* Choose a meter that is easy to use and provides clear readings.
* Calibrate the meter regularly for optimal accuracy.
